I founded the business with Dominic back in 1998, after completing a fixed term contract on a major multi-national Joint Venture project in Germany. Being part of such a huge project with many diverse people and challenges was exciting, and proved to be a massive learning curve for both of us – and pushing the boundaries of what we thought we were capable of. Taking this step so early in our careers really broadened our horizons and made us think very differently about what the future might hold. So at the end of the project we took the decision to set up on our own. We knew nothing about business, or the challenges we might face, but were young, brimming with energy, and had a belief that we could do a great job for clients and build a team of good people around us. Of course, none of it was as easy as we had first thought, and we had to be far more resilient and resourceful than we had ever imagined, but we were a determined team. Our different perspectives and approaches meant where one of us hit a problem, the other could usually find a way forward. Our agility and flexibility in our start up phase was critical to our ability to make the most of the opportunities that came along.
Being new to business, we quickly learnt that building good relationships with staff and clients was crucial to our future success. As an SME, we understand the capabilities and potential of every one of our people. To us they are each individuals and we know their talent and potential. It's so important to the future success of our business that we have a loyal team of people who feel valued and supported. This commitment to our grassroots means we can deliver excellent service to our clients, and our people can feel invested in their projects and challenges. But it’s a two way street. Our people know that there are no glass ceilings at Solomons. If you have the drive and aptitude the sky is the limit, and there's nothing I like to see more than seeing a team member progress to the highest levels of achievement in the company. It makes me feel proud that we have the enablers in place to make this happen and create fast-track development opportunities for the talent we invest in and nurture so carefully.
