Our Story

Built on relationships

Solomons Europe was established in 1998 by entrepreneurial husband and wife team, Dominic and Kerry Doig.

Through their determination to succeed, the business achieved year-on-year growth in the first five years of trading and continues to be a stable and growing company.

From day one, Dominic forged strong industry relationships and built a tight client base. He became well known across the North West and Cumbria regions, securing a broad spread of long-term, main contractor and specialist contracting clients - some of which the company has now worked with for over a decade.

Focused on quality

Dominic and Kerry were quick to understand that the success of their business would largely be dependent on the quality and value of services provided.

Maintaining their exceptionally high standards, Kerry worked tirelessly to establish Solomons Europe as a credible professional practice; achieving ISO and Investors in People recognition – as well as becoming an approved RICS APC Structured Training provider. No mean feat for a business of fewer than 15 people at that time.

This focus on quality and technical excellence paid off. Not only could Solomons compete for business with the more prominent players in their industry - securing prequalified status with companies such as United Utilities - but this 'small giant' could also attract and retain talent.

The current Board and shareholders, for example, are made up entirely of homegrown professionals, with the vast majority having built their careers alongside the business having joined at grassroots level.

Long-term regional commitment

Dominic and Kerry have made some significant commitments to growth and job creation across the North.

Solomons boasts an established track record of bringing out the best in our people. And we will continue to provide the support they need to drive the business forward and develop their careers at the same time.

Passionate about continuous improvement, we instil the need for professional CPD in our teams; investing in the provision of focused and accessible training workshops, tutorials and guidance notes, created both in house and with external consultants from both professional and academic institutions.

Resilience and adaptability are at our core. Ensuring our people can be the best they can be will enable us to ride the tangible mood for change in our industry: a change that we are also keen to drive forward. Reskilling, employment, entrepreneurship and personal health and wellbeing are encapsulated in our Future Skills Academy, are central to our philosophy and form part of our fresh approach to social impact.

Through long-term investment in our people and our regions, we hope to play a role in creating more resilient local economies and a better, more sustainable industry. It is no longer practical to see a company's clients, people and social impact as separate functions. These elements are an inextricably linked ecosystem that must work together for the whole to be truly successful.

Always adapting

Dominic and Kerry attribute their long-term success to being agile, resilient and willing to adapt to change.

Our Philosophy, refreshed in response to the "new world of work" emenating from the coronavirus pandemic and a rapidly evolving construction industry, is testament to this.

"We take the opportunities as they arise, and withstand the blows when they hit," they say.

"This is the life of an SME. The ability to accept, adapt and renew is crucial."

As an entrepreneurial business, we do take risks, but we do this from an informed perspective. We have a responsibility to our staff to protect their jobs and incomes, and we also, personally, have ‘skin in the game’. As a Board we are part of the business, not faceless shareholders without accountability. Right at the very top level it's our own homes and assets on the line if we make a wrong decision. That means we never take success for granted; it can only come with focus and determination. And we always look to ensure we have the necessary backup plans in place, just in case we need to take a change in direction.
