We know from experience that resilient and resourceful businesses can bring opportunity and prosperity to a local economy. Our team is rooted in the regions we operate in and we take the time to understand the communities we serve. That is why we recruit and train local talent, support local projects and initiatives and, when we see a gap, introduce our own. We remain committed to being a positive contributor.

Swimming with the Big Fish

We have always passionately believed that SMEs are the key to the nation’s economic growth.

Their agility, flexibility and absolute focus on client satisfaction set them apart. Their closeness to the communities in which they are based, means they share their success locally – whether that is through their recruitment and training activities, support for local causes or charitable activities.

Solomons Europe is driven by a desire to make a difference through our work with clients and as a business and continue to be inspired by the power of collaboration.

That is why we developed the Swimming with the Big Fish concept, which has led to the creation of the TeesSMEs alliance in Teesside and the Power 8 collaboration of companies in Cumbria.

Inspired thinking

We took inspiration from the approach taken by EDF when embarking on the huge Hinkley Point C nuclear power station development in Somerset.

Working in partnership with the business community and academia, they actively sought out local SMEs and helped them to scale up, form alliances and ultimately secure long-term contracts, in the process creating jobs, training opportunities and countless social impact initiatives.

Taking the ethos North, we created the TeesSMEs alliance. Initially targeting opportunities relating to the Teesworks development – the UK’s largest industrial zone and Freeport – we have joined forces with nine other locally-based like-minded SMEs to collaborate on a whole host of developments taking place in a region bursting at the seams with opportunities. To the west in Cumbria, we formed the Power 8 partnership to share opportunities and collaborate on projects, primarily relating to Sellafield and the wider nuclear sector, but also including other major employers and anchor institutions in the county. And we are working closely with Sellafield Ltd on major frameworks with the aim of ensuring SMEs – both individually and collectively – are given a hand up, not a hand-out, when it comes to securing the long-term work at the site – allowing them to recruit, invest locally and support social impact initiatives that make a real difference to people’s lives and career prospects.

We believe SMEs are already “small giants”. But collectively they can generate huge power and deliver positive outcomes that make a real difference to people’s lives and the communities in which they live.

The TeesSMEs alliance was officially launched in March 2021. It brings together Solomons Europe and nine Teesside-based SMEs with the capability and capacity to deliver major projects in the region and driven by the desire to create a local legacy focused on job creation, training and shared prosperity.

Alliance members include Seymour Civil Engineering, Addison Project, AVRS Systems, Francis Brown Ltd, Group Industrial UK Ltd, Booth Construction, Projex SolutionsJohnson Procurement Solutions and Lynas Engineers.

Pay it Forward

Some companies have a significant social impact budget and a dedicated team to handle it, but founders Dominic and Kerry Doig take a more hands-on approach.

In their second year of trading, an unexpected loan of £20,000 from a former boss given entirely on trust, enabled them to embark on Solomons Europe's first growth phase. Now, a well-established business, Solomons has an opportunity to help others start their career and business journeys, both inside and outside the company.

Mirroring the generosity, faith and trust given to Dominic and Kerry over 20 years ago, Solomons launched its Entrepreneurs Fund for SMEs in 2018 as part of the company's 20th Anniversary celebrations. Firmly embedded in the way the company does business, the three pillars of this scheme - Our Futures, Our Communities, Our Industry - provide a focus for support and investment.

#PIF #PayItForward

Our Futures

How the company supports its people and the next generation of talent to grow and develop.

Our Communities

How the company is an active contributor to the local communities it works alongside.

Our Industry

How the company does its business and how we can positively influence changes.

Case Study: Fit District Festival

With growing concerns about mental health problems in our industry, and already having run successful outdoor events for staff and their families, we decided to reach out to the wider community.

Taking inspiration from the NHS '5 ways to wellbeing' campaign, we set about creating our first-ever health and fitness festival in 2019.

Perfectly aligned with our Pay It Forward philosophy, the Solomons Fit District Festival would offer other SMEs, their clients, Britain's Energy Coast Business Cluster members and local residents a chance to try a whole host of fitness and wellbeing activities over two days.

Fun and fitness for all

Made possible by the overwhelming kindness and generosity of fitness instructors, coaches and SMEs from around Cumbria and beyond - who enthusiastically agreed to give their time to this first-of-a-kind event - participants enjoyed wild swimming, stand up paddleboarding, pilates, Piloxing, active yoga and lots more.

Alongside our event partners, Emma and Laura from Fit District, were Libby Dixon Pilates, Sarah Brook Fitness, Amy Johnson from Lifecycol, and award-winning luxury retreat coaches, James and Claire Davis from 38 Degrees North, who shared their expertise on stage.

Offstage, Claire and Jon from Whitehaven-based Better Bodies UK set up and ran a "challenge area" that pushed brave participants to their limits.

Attendees also had the chance to learn new skills like aerial dance from Georgi Thorns, mindfulness from Martin Summerfield of Anchorpoint, and paediatric First Aid from Natalie Groggins of Little Lifers First Aid.

Carlisle band, Hardwicke Circus, brought the weekend to a close with sensational live music. Finding a whole new legion of fans on the night, they gave everything they'd got to wind up the event in true festival fashion!

Who Wants to be an Entrepreneur?

Our Entrepreneurs Fund launched in 2018 and continues as part of our Pay it Forward commitment. The scheme offers interest-free loans to start-ups and micro businesses taking their first step towards business growth.

Our 2018 'Who Wants to be an Entrepreneur?' competition proved to be a thoroughly rewarding and energising experience for everyone involved. Working with such highly motivated, imaginative business owners inspired our Directors to take the idea forward and reach out to a new audience.

In 2019, we teamed up with the Magic Club, a young people's organisation based in Claremont, Blackpool, to pilot a new way for businesses to inspire young people to become the entrepreneurs of the future. Here's what happened...

Making a positive contribution

Through our long-term commitment to social impact and our Pay It Forward initiative, we are always looking for innovative ways to bring new opportunity and prosperity to the communities we work alongside. Opening the door for fledgeling businesses, growing local talent, and supporting the local economy remains high on our list of priorities, as does making a positive change within our industry.
